I love using and helping others use doTERRA essential oils. But you know what I love even more? How much building this business has bettered our lives, and showing others how they can build a business that can radically change theirs too.
I work with natural wellness providers (like chiropractors, massage therapists, nutritionists, etc), self-employed powerhouses, life coaches and health coaches, and moms and pops who want to make a career or expand their current practice with essential oils. I show them how to do it without sacrificing your real priorities or making all the mistakes that I made in my first few years.
Why Build a Business?
It’s the difference between carrying buckets and building a pipeline…
Robert Kiyosaki, bestselling author of Rich Dad, Poor Dad, wrote a story about a man who lived in a village and whose job it was to haul buckets of water from the river to the villagers every day. It was hard, exhausting work, but it was good job security, and who doesn’t love some job security, am I right? However, he knew he wouldn’t be able to haul buckets forever (he wasn’t a spring chicken as it was), so he decided to spend his free hours building a pipeline. People thought he was a little nuts, but he kept at it, hauling just enough buckets to pay the bills and spending nearly as many hours to build his future. When the time finally came to turn on the spigot…well, I’m pretty sure he collapsed from exhaustion and slept for 3 days before he was finally ready to celebrate his accomplishment. Then I’m pretty sure he partied like a rockstar at his genius idea. His customers had all the water they wanted, and he suddenly had the time, energy, and freedom to pursue a life. Or get a massage. Because he deserved it, by golly. When my husband and I heard that story, we looked at each other and said almost in unison, “Holy sh*t, we’re totally carrying buckets.” Despite all our best efforts to work for ourselves, create a passive income, or set our own hours, we were still hauling buckets to pay the bills. That’s when we were introduced to essential oils….
Why Essential Oils?
Our health and wellness is a trillion dollar industry. Caring for our health has always been and will always be a priority, and so it’s an industry that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. And increasingly, people are looking for natural alternatives in and around their homes. They want products without side effects or health risks, things that will help them live better, clean greener, or feel balanced and whole.
Essential oils support all of that. They offer a consumable product that people freaking love, that makes them genuinely happy, and keeps them seriously healthy. A product that people use, want more of, and can’t help but share with others. (Because if you’ve found something that leaves you feeling amazing, who’s not going to shout that from the rooftops?)
Despite their recent boom in popularity, essential oils have been around a long time, and the research being done to expand our knowledge and application of oils is expanding too, like gangbusters.
And with doTERRA’s commitment to research and their desire to take essential oils mainstream, coupled with the recent growth in the industry they’ve inspired, these little bottles of oily goodness aren’t going to be a fad. They really are something you can build a business around. (A business that doesn’t make your skin crawl, I should add. Because making money is fun, but making money doing something that helps others and makes a positive impact on the world? Way better.)
Earning an Income
When you’re considering building a business, you gotta understand how you get paid! And I’d especially encourage you to compare doTERRA’s compensation plan to others in the industry. There’s a big difference.
For starters, it IS an MLM (multi-level marketing, also known as network marketing or direct sales). This is very different than a “pyramid scheme”, which is illegal. doTERRA chose this model because they knew that in order to get oils in people’s hands and take essential oils mainstream, they needed to do something different than 30 second TV commercials, full page magazine ads, and displays at the health food store. They needed to empower consumers to learn about oils and how to use them safely an effectively. Empowerment takes education and education takes time. So the company invests their marketing budget into their members, empowering us to learn more, share better, and improve their lives financially too.
However, the drawback of most MLM companies is that most people can’t make a living at it, even if the product is amazing. That’s because the average compensation plans…well, they suck. They offer tiny commissions, make it impossible to earn bonuses, and are structured in a way that create greed, not support, in their business builders. doTERRA does the exact opposite. In fact, you can check out their income disclosure right here to get an idea of what you can do with doTERRA. (Um, yes, as with any business you build in life, mileage will vary.)
In doTERRA, our income breaks down into two different categories:
- Short-term Income: What you earn through your personal customer sales and bonuses
- Long-Term Income: What you earn as your business and team grows and you’re seeing repeat orders, bonuses, and profit sharing from the company
On average, most people earn about $500 a month after a year of consistently applying the training we offer. After 5 years, that average grows to $6000 a month. (Again, personal mileage will vary based on your experience, effort, and time invested.)
Is this something you wanna see in-depth, and with no BS?
Why Build With Our Community?
An important aspect to consider is the team with which you’re enrolling. Your team – your enroller, sponsor, and crossline peeps – are the ones who will be training, mentoring, guiding, encouraging and celebrating with you. You’ll be working with these people for some time to come so it’s important to consider who will be the right fit for you.
- Whose values align with yours?
- Who has a similar voice and style as you?
- Who can help you reach your goal and stop you before you make any fatal mistakes?
That may or may not be our team, so let me tell you a bit about us so you can see if we are a good fit.
- We do NOT get down with pushy sales tactics.
- We DO get down with real sales skills and training. (Because real sales skills are customer-centric and not pushy.)
- We offer a thriving customer experience for you to better support your customers out of the gate.
- We show our builders how to build without being that annoying person people start to avoid.
- We help our builders prioritize their time and personal commitments.
- We show you the most effective tools and how to use them.
- We work one-on-one and collectively, as well as offer DIY training and info to make sure you’re not wasting time, energy, or money on things that don’t work.
Two Types of Builders
In general, we see two types of builders in our community: those looking to supplement an income and those looking to replace one. You can choose your own level of interest, and even upgrade and change your mind at a later time.
Building a supplemental monthly income of $500-2000
Committed to investing 5-15 consistent hours a week
Doing 4-6 consults (and the occasional class) monthly
Building a full-time monthly income of $2000-10,000+
Investing a consistent 16+ hours a week
Doing 10+ consults and 1-2 classes a month
